"Never forget: Everything worthwhile is uphill!"

Hey Reader,

I hope this message finds you strong, both mentally and physically, as you tackle your latest challenges! Today, I wanted to share a powerful reminder I read recently from John Maxwell’s book No Limits that truly resonates with the ultrarunning journey:

"Never forget: Everything worthwhile is uphill!" – John Maxwell

As runners, we know this truth all too well. The path we choose is never the easy one, and it’s not supposed to be. Whether you’re climbing literal mountains or pushing past mental barriers at miles 22, 32, or 80, everything worthwhile is uphill. And guess what? That’s exactly why it’s worth it.

Here’s why embracing the uphill climb matters so much:

  • Growth happens in the climb: Running ultras is about so much more than crossing the finish line. It’s about the person you become during those relentless miles. It’s in the moments of struggle that we find out how strong, determined, and capable we truly are. We learn so much about ourselves in those moments we are squeezed!

  • Victory tastes sweeter at the summit: When we conquer that impossible hill, whether it’s a brutal incline on the course or a personal barrier we’ve overcome, the reward is always worth it. We’re not just chasing miles; we’re chasing the version of ourselves that can conquer anything.

  • The climb builds physical and mental resilience: When every muscle in your body is screaming to stop, and you choose to keep going anyway—that’s where resilience is born. That grit becomes your most powerful tool, not just in running, but in life. Every uphill battle is a chance to sharpen you.

How to Keep Climbing:

  • Set your eyes on the summit, but focus on the next step: Ultramarathons can feel overwhelming when you think of the whole distance ahead. Break it down. Focus on the step in front of you, and the summit will come.
  • Lean on your community: Whether it’s pacers, fellow runners, or friends cheering you on from afar, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Climbing uphill is tough, but you don’t have to do it alone.
  • Celebrate the struggle: Every uphill battle is a sign you’re pushing your limits. Celebrate the fact that you’re out there doing the hard work that so few are willing to do. Your commitment, your strength, and your endurance are something to be proud of.

Remember, the hills are part of the process. They don’t just represent struggle—they represent everything you’re working towards. As John Maxwell reminds us, "Everything worthwhile is uphill," and in ultrarunning, every uphill mile is leading you to something incredible.

So, next time you find yourself staring at a steep ascent, smile. That climb is taking you exactly where you need to go and making you exactly into who you want to be!

Keep climbing, keep believing, and as always—stay strong!

On the uphill journey,

David

Hey friends, Let’s be real for a minute—running outside in the heat, wind, or rain makes you tougher. The unpredictability of the elements sharpens both your body and your mindset. There’s no climate control. No “pause” button. You learn to adapt. You build grit. But let’s not act like the treadmill’s soft. There’s a different kind of strength required when you're staring at the same wall or window for miles. No breeze, no change of scenery—just the hum of the belt and your own voice...

You Weren’t Meant to Run Alone Hey Reader, This past weekend, something special happened at the Prairie Spirit 100. I was out there testing out my knee and pushing through another 100-mile race. I'll probably speak to that more in a future podcast. I had some observations as I watched others around me. Photo by Mile 90 Photography Sure, there were some strong runners. Some big, crazy, buckle-worthy efforts. Records broken. And plenty of grit on display. But what stood out most to me wasn’t...
