Reignite the Fire: Finding Your Spark Again

Hey there my friends,

We all hit rough patches, don’t we? Those moments where we feel like we’ve lost our edge, that fire that used to drive us forward. Maybe you’re in one of those moments right now—or maybe you know someone who is. Either way, let me tell you something important: it’s not the end of your story.

When the Fire Fades

Think back to a time when you felt unstoppable. Maybe it was during a race, a project, or a time when everything seemed to click. You were at your best, pushing limits, inspiring others, and living with purpose. But life happens. The energy shifts, and you might feel like the version of you that once thrived has gone quiet.

But here’s the truth: that fire isn’t gone. It’s still there, waiting for you to fan the flames.

What do you do?

I'm glad you asked!

Step One: Reflect

Start by asking yourself, what used to light me up? Was it the thrill of a challenge? The joy of helping others? The sense of purpose in working toward something big? Whatever it was, reconnecting with the core of what once inspired you can be a powerful first step.

And while you’re reflecting, remember this:

The past isn’t your competition. It’s proof of what you’re capable of.

Don’t get stuck measuring yourself against where you once were. Instead, use those memories as a reminder of your potential and the strength you carry forward.

Step Two: Take Action

Getting back on track doesn’t require a grand plan. It starts with a single step.

  • Set one small goal today—something simple, doable, and meaningful.
  • Show up for that goal, and then show up again tomorrow. Rinse. Repeat!

Those small wins will build momentum. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself feeling stronger and more capable than you thought possible.

Step Three: Seek and Share Inspiration

Surround yourself with things that lift you up: a good book, a podcast (like the Run the Riot Podcast! lol), or people who encourage you. And don’t forget—one of the best ways to find your spark is to encourage someone else. When you give, you often receive in ways you don’t expect.

Your Fire is Waiting

Let me leave you with this: the fire inside you hasn’t disappeared. It’s just waiting for you to step forward and reignite it. You’ve done hard things before, and you can do them again. The next chapter isn’t about getting back to who you were—it’s about stepping into who you’re becoming. And I believe that version of you is even stronger, wiser, and more inspiring.

Your Gear-Up Checklist

Here’s your action plan for today:

  1. Reflect: Write down one thing that used to inspire you and why it mattered.
  2. Act: Set one small goal for today and commit to it.
  3. Share: Encourage someone else and watch how it lifts both of you.

You’ve got this. Start small, stay consistent, and trust the process.

I'll be looking for you on the trails!

On the journey,

David

Hey friends, Let’s be real for a minute—running outside in the heat, wind, or rain makes you tougher. The unpredictability of the elements sharpens both your body and your mindset. There’s no climate control. No “pause” button. You learn to adapt. You build grit. But let’s not act like the treadmill’s soft. There’s a different kind of strength required when you're staring at the same wall or window for miles. No breeze, no change of scenery—just the hum of the belt and your own voice...

Hey friends! I wanted to take a moment to share something I’m incredibly grateful for… This week, I found out that Run the Riot Podcast was listed #5 on Feedspot’s 30 Best Ultra Running Podcasts! How cool is that?? You can check out the full list here: 30 Best Ultra Running Podcasts I never started the podcast for recognition—I started it because I love this community and I’m fascinated by the stories behind the miles. That this little podcast has grown and connected with so many runners is...

You Weren’t Meant to Run Alone Hey Reader, This past weekend, something special happened at the Prairie Spirit 100. I was out there testing out my knee and pushing through another 100-mile race. I'll probably speak to that more in a future podcast. I had some observations as I watched others around me. Photo by Mile 90 Photography Sure, there were some strong runners. Some big, crazy, buckle-worthy efforts. Records broken. And plenty of grit on display. But what stood out most to me wasn’t...
