Train Your Brain

Conquering the Mind: Train Your Brain

Ultrarunning isn't just a physical test; it's a mental odyssey. While your body carries you mile after mile, it's your mind that pushes you through doubts, fatigue, and the whispers of "give up." So, if you're gearing up for an ultra, consider this your guide to building mental fortitude, the secret weapon in your arsenal.

Facing the Mental Monsters:

Ultras bring unique mental challenges. You can encounter self-doubt, exhaustion-induced hallucinations, and that ever-present voice questioning your sanity for choosing this path. Can I get a witness? Know that these are normal, common experiences. Accept them, don't fear them.

Sharpening Your Mental Tools:

Here are some strategies to conquer the mental terrain:

  • Visualization: Mentally rehearse your race, picturing yourself overcoming obstacles and celebrating at the finish line. Immerse yourself in the positive emotions of success.
  • Positive Self-Talk: Silence the negative voice with affirmations like "I am strong," "I can do this," and "One step at a time." Repeat these mantras like a personal cheerleader. (pom-poms are optional)
  • Mindfulness: Practice staying present, in the moment to manage anxiety. Focus on your surroundings, your breath, and the rhythm of your feet.
  • Gratitude: Shift your perspective by acknowledging the beauty around you, appreciating your body's capabilities, and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to challenge yourself.
  • Break it Down: Don't get overwhelmed by the entire distance. Focus on conquering smaller portions, like aid stations or even that next tree…or next step! Celebrate each milestone as a victory.
  • Community Support: Surround yourself with positive and supportive people who believe in you. Share your fears and struggles, and draw strength from their encouragement.

Fueling Your Mind:

Just like your body, your mind needs nourishment. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, and take care of your body. A well-rested and mindful mind is resilient and adaptable.

Remember:

  • It's a Journey, Not a Race: Don't pressure yourself to set speed records. Focus on enjoying the experience, learning from each step, and embracing the adventure.
  • Embrace the Challenge: View difficulties as opportunities for growth. Remember, the greatest victories are often won after the toughest battles.
  • Celebrate the Finish: Whether you cross the line first or last, be proud of yourself for taking on this incredible challenge. You've accomplished something extraordinary.

Beyond the Finish:

Mental strength built for ultrarunning spills over into everyday life. You'll become more resilient, confident, and adaptable, equipped to handle challenges with a renewed sense of purpose. Ultrarunning might push you to your limits, but it ultimately empowers you to conquer them, both on the trail and beyond.

Get Inspired:

  • Read stories of ultrarunners who overcame mental hurdles.
  • Listen to podcasts (The Run the Riot Podcast!) or watch documentaries about the mental aspects of the sport.
  • Connect with other ultrarunners and share your experiences.

Remember, conquering the mind is just as important as conquering the miles. With the right tools and mindset, you can embark on an unforgettable ultra journey, discovering the depths of your inner strength and resilience.

On the Journey,

David

Hey friends, Let’s be real for a minute—running outside in the heat, wind, or rain makes you tougher. The unpredictability of the elements sharpens both your body and your mindset. There’s no climate control. No “pause” button. You learn to adapt. You build grit. But let’s not act like the treadmill’s soft. There’s a different kind of strength required when you're staring at the same wall or window for miles. No breeze, no change of scenery—just the hum of the belt and your own voice...

Hey friends! I wanted to take a moment to share something I’m incredibly grateful for… This week, I found out that Run the Riot Podcast was listed #5 on Feedspot’s 30 Best Ultra Running Podcasts! You Weren’t Meant to Run Alone Hey Reader, This past weekend, something special happened at the Prairie Spirit 100. I was out there testing out my knee and pushing through another 100-mile race. I'll probably speak to that more in a future podcast. I had some observations as I watched others around me. Photo by Mile 90 Photography Sure, there were some strong runners. Some big, crazy, buckle-worthy efforts. Records broken. And plenty of grit on display. But what stood out most to me wasn’t...
