Turning Adversity into Strength: How Challenges Can Fuel Your Running Goals

Hey Reader!

We all encounter setbacks and challenges, both in life and in our training. But we can find power in adversity! We can use it to fuel our big goals! Whether you’re running through a rough training period or dealing with life’s larger challenges, transforming hardship into motivation is a skill that every runner can develop.

Why Adversity Can Be a Catalyst for Growth - Adversity might be the last thing you’d choose to face, but it often becomes a key driver in achieving things you never thought possible. When life demands that we give more, we learn to push through tough miles, keep moving through fatigue, and silence the voice that keeps screaming for us to “STOP!”

Research shows that athletes who develop mental resilience are not only more successful in reaching their physical goals, but they also experience a higher level of satisfaction and fulfillment in their sport. Every challenge you encounter, whether on the trail or in daily life, is an opportunity to strengthen your endurance and redefine your limits.

Applying Resilience in Running - Consider using a past challenge from your own life as a mental tool during your next race or tough run. This could be the memory of overcoming a previous struggle, the mental strength you gained through a difficult season, or the gratitude you feel for being able to run. In other words, INSPIRE YOURSELF! Here’s how:

  • Set “Resilience Reminders”: Before your race or big training run, think of a personal experience where you overcame something difficult. Use this memory to power you through the miles when the going gets tough.
  • Build a “Mental Mile Marker”: Choose a point on your run—like the halfway mark or a challenging hill—as a place to mentally “recharge.” When you reach it, recall the energy and strength you’ve used to overcome past challenges, letting it fuel you forward. Each marker becomes a reminder that you have the strength and resilience to keep going.
  • Channel Your Motivation: Running can become a tribute to the strength you’ve developed, as well as a celebration of the resilience you continue to build. Make your run a celebration of how much you've grown and how far you've come.

An Inspiring Example: Suzan Brydon’s Journey - In our latest podcast episode, ultrarunner Suzan Brydon shared her story of discovering resilience through adversity. When Suzan’s husband was diagnosed with cancer, his resolve to keep moving forward inspired her to take on new challenges, from her first 5K to ultras and even back-to-back > 100-mile races.

Through Suzan’s story, we see a great example of resilience as a journey, and each challenge you face contributes to the strength you build along the way.

Remember: Every mile, every setback, and every win is part of your journey. Embrace the tough moments—they’re building you into a stronger runner and a more resilient person. Embrace the suck!

On the journey,
David

Hey friends, Let’s be real for a minute—running outside in the heat, wind, or rain makes you tougher. The unpredictability of the elements sharpens both your body and your mindset. There’s no climate control. No “pause” button. You learn to adapt. You build grit. But let’s not act like the treadmill’s soft. There’s a different kind of strength required when you're staring at the same wall or window for miles. No breeze, no change of scenery—just the hum of the belt and your own voice...

You Weren’t Meant to Run Alone Hey Reader, This past weekend, something special happened at the Prairie Spirit 100. I was out there testing out my knee and pushing through another 100-mile race. I'll probably speak to that more in a future podcast. I had some observations as I watched others around me. Photo by Mile 90 Photography Sure, there were some strong runners. Some big, crazy, buckle-worthy efforts. Records broken. And plenty of grit on display. But what stood out most to me wasn’t...
